The coach of the Mexico national team was injured during the match against Honduras.

A can thrown from the stands struck Mexico's head coach Javier Aguirre, leaving him bleeding after the away defeat of 2-0 against Honduras in the first match of the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals on Friday, November 15.

Aguirre was walking along the sideline to shake hands with his colleague Reinaldo Rueda after the match when the can hit him on the top of his head, causing blood to flow from the wound.

“This is football, and there’s no point in mentioning anything else because I’m not one to complain,” Aguirre told reporters after the match at Estadio General Francisco Morazan in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

“The safety of teams and fans is a priority for CONCACAF. Such acts of violence have no place in football,” stated the governing body in a declaration.

“The incident will now be referred to the CONCACAF Disciplinary Committee for further review and investigation.”

In July, Aguirre took charge of the Mexican national football team for the third time, replacing Jaime Lozano, who was dismissed after a disappointing exit from the group stage of the Copa America.
