The new accusation pertains to an already opened case regarding alleged fraud involving players, including Turkey's Arda Turan and Uruguay's Fernando Muslera, by a former manager of the Denizbank branch. The management of Denizbank denies any involvement in the wrongdoing.
The Turkish news agency Anadolu reported on Tuesday, November 19, that Denizbank's CEO Hakan Ateş and former assistant general manager Mehmet Aydogdu, who face similar allegations, deny the claims outlined in the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office.
Commenting on the widely discussed details of the indictment, Denizbank stated late on Tuesday, November 19: “We have not received any information regarding the prosecutor's investigation as reflected in some print media and publications today.”
The bank announced that the disclosure of the indictment's details violated the confidentiality of the case. Details of the indictments are regularly published through the Anadolu news agency.
Last week, Denizbank reported that Aydogdu had resigned.
“I do not accept these accusations,” the indictment quotes CEO Ateş as saying.
According to Aydogdu, he stated: “I have nothing to do with this matter and I am not aware of it.”
No arrests have been made, and no court hearings have been scheduled in connection with the new indictment.
In a case initiated last year, prosecutors sought to sentence Sözçıl Erzhan, a former branch manager, to 216 years in prison, accusing her of defrauding football celebrities, including former Barcelona midfielder Turan and Galatasaray goalkeeper Muslera.
According to last year's indictment, Erzhan defrauded around $44 million from 18 individuals by promising substantial returns on their investments in a “secret special fund.” The latest indictment lists 24 victims.
According to the indictment, Erzhan convinced them to invest in the fund, including informing them that former Turkey national team coach Fatih Terim also invested in this fund.
Erzhan has been imprisoned, and the case against her is ongoing.
